A new energy coalition has formed in Massachusetts and is calling for a stronger commitment to powering the commonwealth with clean, renewable energy sources.

Members of the new coalition Mass Power Forward held press conferences in Boston, Fall River, Holyoke, Peabody, Pittsfield and Weymouth at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Several Western Massachusetts elected officials and community activists held a press conference outside of Holyoke City Hall.

The organization is a partnership of more thanĀ 80 groups from across the state. They have broad goals including reducing a dependence on energy sources such as coal, oil, gas and nuclear and increasing the percentage of power generated by solar and wind.

“I’m so honored to be standing here today as we launch Mass Power Forward,” Claire Miller, of Toxics Action Center. “We have a vision for Massachusetts where children don’t grow up with asthma.”

Local energy activists spoke of efforts that lead to the closure the Mt. Tom Coal Plant and current opposition to a proposed Kinder Morgan NED pipeline.
